Marty stands about 6 feet 5 inches tall on a wheeled base, with cameras and lidar that watch the floor for liquid and debris and the shelves for gaps and mispriced items. It navigates a stored store map during trading hours, alerting staff over the store system when it finds a hazard. Its cartoon eyes and name were a deliberate attempt to make an in store robot feel approachable to shoppers. Nearly 500 units were rolled out across Giant, Martin's and Stop and Shop stores in 2019.
