Geminoid HI-1 was moulded from Hiroshi Ishiguro's own body and driven by about 50 pneumatic actuators that reproduce breathing, blinking, small posture shifts and mouth movement. An operator sits at a console where cameras track face and lip motion, which the android reproduces while the operator sees and hears the remote room. ATR and Osaka University used it for lecture and conversation experiments on telepresence, and it started a family of later Geminoid androids.
