Ranger uses two pairs of legs that walk in a straight line much like a planar biped, steered by a small ankle actuator, and weighs about 10 kg including its lithium ion batteries. Andy Ruina's group designed it on passive dynamic principles, letting the legs swing largely under gravity so motors add only small amounts of energy each step. On 1 and 2 May 2011 it walked 65.2 km in 30 hours 49 minutes across 186,076 steps on a single charge, after earlier records of about 9 km in 2008 and 23 km in 2010.
