VNII Transmash drew on its planetary rover experience, beginning with Lunokhod 1, to build a remotely driven machine that could work in radiation fields lethal to people. The robot was fitted with a blade to push highly radioactive debris off the roofs beside the destroyed reactor, and was driven by radio from a shielded position with help from mast mounted television cameras. Working from 8 August to 10 October 1986 the machines cleared about 90 tonnes of radioactive material and kept roughly a thousand people out of the most dangerous zone.
