Yeti was built at Dartmouth's Thayer School of Engineering as a small battery powered vehicle, light enough to cross snow bridges that would swallow a tractor. Driving programmed grid patterns under satellite navigation, it carries ground penetrating radar to detect crevasses along traverse routes and to map buried infrastructure, including surveys at the South Pole and on the Greenland ice sheet. Because it is unmanned and expendable, it can be sent ahead of human convoys into hazardous terrain.
