Spirit landed in Gusev crater on 4 January 2004 for a planned 90 sol mission and kept working for 2,208 sols. Solar arrays and lithium ion batteries drove six wheels on a rocker bogie chassis, with a camera mast, a robotic arm and spectrometers for geology. It climbed the Columbia Hills and found silica deposits and carbonates pointing to hot spring or steam vent activity, then became embedded in soft sand at a site called Troy in 2009 and fell silent in March 2010.
