Optimus is a bipedal humanoid roughly 1.73 metres tall, driven by custom rotary and linear electric actuators with an 11-degree-of-freedom hand. Control comes from end-to-end neural network policies trained on video and teleoperation data, reusing perception software from Tesla's driver assistance stack. Tesla first walked a working prototype on stage in September 2022 and showed a lighter second generation in December 2023. Units have been shown handling parts inside Tesla plants and serving food at a company diner, but none have been sold to outside customers.
Of note
- Walked unassisted on stage at Tesla AI Day in September 2022
- Second generation announced in December 2023 with reduced mass and faster walking
- Shown handling parts inside Tesla manufacturing sites and serving food at a company diner
