RaiBo was built in Jemin Hwangbo's laboratory to test controllers trained entirely in simulation, including a physics model of how feet sink into granular ground. A recurrent neural network policy infers ground properties from proprioception as the robot moves, so no terrain sensing or retuning is needed between surfaces. It ran at just over three metres per second on a beach and crossed grass, running tracks and soft mats without modification, work published in Science Robotics in 2023.
