Laikago used twelve brushless motors with planetary gearboxes designed in house, which let Unitree sell a dynamic quadruped for a fraction of the price of Western machines. It walked and trotted with onboard balance control, carried a small payload and offered a development interface for researchers. Unitree shipped it to universities and companies from 2018, and the actuator and pricing approach it established runs through every later Unitree model.
