LittleDog was deliberately simple and identical across teams so that research groups could compare footstep planning and control algorithms on the same machine. Each of its four legs had three electric joints with position sensing, and the robot walked over modular rock fields while an external motion capture system tracked it. Teams from Carnegie Mellon, MIT, Stanford, the University of Pennsylvania and elsewhere used it to develop terrain aware footstep planning that fed into later legged robots.
