Cheetah 2 used custom high torque brushless motors with low gear ratios, an arrangement that lets the machine sense and control foot forces through the motors themselves rather than with force sensors. An impulse based bounding controller set the force each leg applied during stance, which held the gait together across speeds without retuning. It bounded at up to 6.4 metres per second, ran untethered across grass in 2014, and in 2015 used onboard lidar to clear obstacles up to 46 centimetres high while running.
