Scout II was built at the Ambulatory Robotics Laboratory to test how little actuation a running machine really needs. Each leg had a single motor driven hip and a compliant prismatic lower leg that stored and returned energy, and a simple open loop controller cycled the hips to produce bounding. The robot bounded at speeds above one metre per second and climbed stairs, showing that mechanical compliance can replace much of the control complexity in dynamic legged locomotion.
