Solo 12

Open hardware torque controlled quadruped weighing a few kilograms, designed so any laboratory could build one from printed parts.

Solo 12 came from the Open Dynamic Robot Initiative, a collaboration of the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, New York University and LAAS-CNRS, which published complete plans for a quadruped made from three dimensional printed parts and off the shelf components. Twelve back drivable brushless actuators give torque control at every joint, so it supports whole body control and learning research usually reserved for expensive hardware. PAL Robotics later assembled and sold ready made units, and the design has been rebuilt in laboratories worldwide.
