Spot began as the battery powered SpotMini shown in 2016 and became Boston Dynamics' first product, leased from 2019 and sold openly from June 2020. Twelve electric joints drive its legs, five stereo camera pairs give obstacle avoidance in every direction, and mission software repeats inspection routes autonomously with a dock for charging. Payload ports carry lidar scanners, gas detectors, thermal cameras or a seven joint arm, and customers include power utilities, oil and gas operators, construction firms and police forces.
