TITAN XI

TITAN XI was developed in the Hirose laboratory for slope reinforcement work on Japanese mountainsides where wheeled machines cannot operate safely. Four legs with three hydraulic joints each carried the body and a drilling rig, and two winches paid out tethers anchored uphill to hold the machine on inclines of up to about thirty degrees. Field trials showed it stepping over the concrete grid frames used in slope protection while positioning its drill, a rare example of a working construction quadruped.
