A1 replaced Laikago with lighter in-house actuators, a top speed above three metres per second and a simpler shell. It exposes low level joint torque control through an interface that suits reinforcement learning and controller research, so many locomotion papers between 2020 and 2023 used it. Unitree sold it worldwide at a few thousand dollars before replacing it with the Go1 series.
