WABOT-1
Full-scale anthropomorphic robot built at Waseda University that walked on two legs, gripped objects and held simple spoken exchanges.

WABOT-1 combined the WAM-4 artificial hands, the WL-5 artificial legs, an artificial vision system and an artificial mouth and ear into one full-size machine. Its hydraulically driven legs took slow static steps of roughly 45 seconds each, while separate limb control, vision and conversation subsystems handled each function. Ichiro Kato's team assessed its overall ability as comparable to a one and a half year old child, and the machine established the anthropomorphic research line that later produced WABOT-2 and the WABIAN series.
