Valkyrie stands about 1.88 m tall with 44 degrees of freedom driven by series elastic rotary and linear actuators, giving the joints mechanical compliance and force control. Sensing centres on a rotating laser and stereo camera head, with hazard cameras in the torso and inertial units in the pelvis, and a custom dual voltage battery runs the robot for roughly an hour. After the DARPA trials NASA placed units with MIT, Northeastern University, the University of Edinburgh and the University of Texas at Austin, and has since used the platform to study robots working ahead of astronauts.
